LWML Circles
About The LWML LWML is short for Lutheran Women's Missionary League. We are an auxiliary organization of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. For 60 years the purpose of the organization has been to encourage and equip women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to financially support global missions. At Ascension the "Circles" provide opportunities for spiritual growth; promote Christian fellowship among the women of the Church; assist in charitable endeavors; gather funds for mission projects; and provide mission outreach in the Carolina's District and the nation through our Mite Box participation. We assist with receptions for funerals and other special events at the church. This year we hosted the district LWML "Joy Event", a day long seminar with singing, inspirational speakers, food and fellowship. All women of Ascension, young and old, are considered members of LWML and are encouraged to participate in all the activities. In the past year fund raising projects supported Dr. Evelyn Davis, Friendship Trays of Charlotte (meals for the homebound), a Seminary student support fund at the seminary in St. Louis, and the nursery attendant at Ascension. In addition our LWML supported district projects, supports a counselor at Camp Linn Haven, and contributes to a delegate fund for the National LWML convention. Our funds were raised through our pledges, a Thanksgiving Breakfast, sale of cookbooks and mugs and a Silver Tea. Mites (our dimes and pennies) are also collected to support District and National Mission projects. In the past year Ascension donated about $814.00 to mites alone. We feel LWML has something to offer women of all ages. We welcome you and invite YOU to attend a meeting and be a part of this growing organization. Contact any of the officers for more information. Quilters of Ascension This group of women and men meet each Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in Luther Hall through out the calendar year. Shirley Grotheer and Louise Nordman co-chair the quilting fellowship. Please call either Shirley (704 398-9121) or Louise (803 548-5435), if you desire information about Ascension Quilters. All helpers are most welcome with this hands-on ministry, whether you can thread a needle or not. Over the past five plus years the group have given quilts to those in need following natural disasters. Quilts have been sent to the Outer Banks (Hurricane Isabel), to eastern North Carolina (Hurricane Floyd), to Florida, to Franklin, NC, to Boone, NC (2004 hurricanes), to eastern Tennessee (tornadoes), to West Virginia (flooding) and to many other needs. Two ongoing service projects are quilts for new residents at the Girls Home of Rock Hill, SC and to the Women in Transition program of Charlotte YWCA. We've assisted the Girls Home with funds from a Sunday spaghetti luncheon, silent auction and sale of bazaar items. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has matched these fund-raising projects. The quilts are approximately 64 inches by 84 inches and are tied to hold the layers together. Fabric for the quilts has been donated. Through a member's contact we have received a bountiful cloth supply for tops and backings. We do purchase batting for the quilts with contributions from individuals, from the sale of displayed quilts in Luther Hall and from the Ascension Endowment Fund. Our fellowship reserves the second Thursday of each month to celebrate birthdays of our quilting members. We host a potluck luncheon and invite the church staff as well as the guests of the monthly birthday celebrant(s). We are a congenial group with a wide range of age and we welcome you to join us.
