'In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.'  Colossians 2:3
Vol. 19 No. 3 - Fall, 2005
  Dear Friends,

It's time for my quarterly Newsletter, and I want to let you know what's on my schedule for this fall the courses, the reflection and prayer training, and the special activities. It's all possible because of your support of my ministry with your gifts and prayers, and I'm grateful!

By the time you receive this, I will already be at our International Center in Dallas, TX where I will be doing the following:

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Certification Training

The MBTI is the most widely used personality instrument in the world, and because it is a "Level B" psychological instrument, individuals who administer and interpret it to others must go through special certification training. Since 1992, I have done the certification every 18 months to two years (sometimes in the U. S., sometimes in one of the countries where we are serving), because our counselors, career guidance staff, and team facilitators use it in their work. I have certified over 300 persons during that period of time. The current participants are coming from India, Japan, and Holland, as well as from several U. S. locations.

I offer the course as a master's level "test interpretation" one through Azusa Pacific University, where I am an adjunct professor, and then we have an arrangement with Consulting Psychologists Press, the accrediting agency, that those who successfully complete the course will be allowed to purchase the instruments. It's a course that lasts for over two weeks, and requires a lot of advance work on my part (preparing the notebook of materials each participant receives for study, etc.). It's also a challenge for the students, especially since they not only learn all the MBTI applications, but they have to become proficient in statistics as well. I try to make the statistics part fun by using M and Ms, peanuts, and other goodies to teach the various aspectswhen they get something right, they can eat those particular treats!

The Profile of Characteristics, Preferences, and Skills

I always offer this "train the trainer" course directly after the MBTI training, because it is designed to prepare persons to facilitate teambuilding sessions for language teams, using individuals' scores from the MBTI. These scores are matched to the tasks and skills necessary for an effective translation project.

There are eight categories of tasks and skills that have been identified as being important in the overall planning, implementation, and completion of successful intercultural language projects (each with 12 or more listings). The eight categories are Home, Living, and Practical Skills; Relationships; Leadership; Organizational and Management Skills; Investigative Tasks, Data-Handling and Analytical Tasks; Production; and Teaching/Training/Promotion.

The trainees will also learn how to facilitate interaction and effective team development with topics that bring about better communication, commitment, the reconciliation of conflict, and the preparation of team goals and objectives.

The October Reflection and Prayer Training

Many, many thanks to the individuals, groups, and churches who have given scholarships for those who need financial assistance in order to attend. The October 414 training will be held at Brookhaven Retreat about two hours drive from our Dallas Center, and I have agreed to take more participants for this session. They work in Ethiopia, the Philippines, Kenya, Senegal, East Asia, Indonesia, and various other places around the world, as well as at some of our locations in the U.S.

The participants will experience, and learn how to facilitate, the following R & P topics: A Spiritual Inventory and Spiritual Markers, Finding A Rhythm of Rest, Life Tasks: Strength for the Journey, Our Time of Need, Personal Worship, Prayer Areas and Issues, and The Servant Leader.

Two Retreat Topics

As part of the reflection and prayer training, I teach the participants how to lead two retreats. Life Passages and The Missionary Experience: How do our missionary experiences impact the usual life passages? And how can we find the necessary joy and strength to sustain us? Discussion focuses on the adult life cycle and change; the stages of missionary life, faith development issues, and life span tasks. There are worksheets for each decade of life, missionary vignettes, and appropriate articles.

New Testament Images of Adult Growth and Change: What can we discover about the adult learning process from Biblical images? They have important implications for the ways we discover aspects of spiritual truth, and how our faith can develop and grow. The six images are New Wine, The Body, The Blowing Wind, The Yoke, The Grain of Wheat, and The Bread and Cup.
